WorkforceConnect is a joint business and education program designed to offer area educators, guidance counselors and administrators a chance to "see" the application of their academics in the workplace.

Participating businesses open their doors to groups of educators and present:

Educators are able to see first-hand how their daily instruction and career development work with students of all ages contributes to a successful and well prepared future.

To accommodate the maximum number of eductors in 2008, we will be holding three tracks - each involves two days of business tours and a third day to generate an integrated lesson or guidance plan that takes advantage of the business knowledge and information gathered during the tours. Continuing education hours are granted for the tour days and two Masters Credits are available to educators who create exemplary plans as a final portion of the program.

Track I: June 2 - 4: (Space is limited to 20 participants.) An overview of core growth industries of the county, the companies and organizations who have registered to host educators are:

Track II: June 9 - 11: (Space is limited to 20 participants.) Guided by the Micro Business Development Center, this track is about entrepreneurship and the qualities, risks, rewards, discipline and creativity involved in starting a company from scratch. Learn how to make your class an entrepreneurship class and provide a chance for your students to market their products! Meet people who have successfully started their own companies!

Track III: June 10 - 12: (Space is limited to 20 participants.) The metro area hosts a spectrum of employment that includes the arts, finance, and specialty healthcare. The companies and organizations who have registered to host educators are:

The week included a presentation by Bill Becker, President, Adams County Economic Development entitled: "Workforce Development Is Economic Development". This presentation outlines the role of economic development agencies in the attraction and retention of key employers and the signficant role a qualified workforce plays in these efforts.

To demonstrate the many stages of technology development and how entire companies thrive by finding multiple markets and applications for their core product, Cheryl Crawford, Account Executive, Mapquest presented, "Mapquest: Past, Present and Future".

Joey Failma, Project Manager, Final Touch Contruction, demonstrated the role of "tech translator" - the person within the company that maximizes the technology as it is applied to the business or organizational needs. He presented, "Becoming a Tech Translator" and provided an overview of his roles in multiple industries as a bridge creator between the technology and the application.

The concluding day was orchestrated by Mary Jenkins, Change Coach, and Denise Hearn, Consultant for Career Academies, as they led the group in a lesson plan writing exercise that integrated state academic standards and workplace competencies. As part of their presentation, they aske each of the groups to outline suggestions for lesson plans that integrated multiple academic areas around core themes. The table responses were:

WorkforceConnect is designed to offer area educators a chance to “see” the application of their academics in the workplace. This weeklong event enables you to:
* Better prepare your students to succeed in the competitive workplaces of today and tomorrow
* Visit up to 10 worksites representing the spectrum of industries in our region. Each visit will give you insight into the organization’s products and services, future economic outlook, hiring trends and needs, career paths and critical skills required for success.
* Obtain an overview of the industrial and employment base of the county. You will learn of new developments and company expansions that offer opportunities for well-prepared students.

You will have the opportunity to build ongoing relationships with companies, like:
